Yet Pearl had reason to thank Calipari earlier this spring. Because Calipari left Memphis for a record eight-year, $31.6 million contract with Kentucky in April, it created a job vacancy at the other end of the state. Pearl, who has led the Vols to four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and an Southeastern Conference title, immediately became a hot name in the Memphis coaching search.
