Bill Luckett announces formation of Progress for Mississippi
Clarksdale attorney and businessman Bill Luckett took the first step in throwing his hat in the ring for a run at the 2011 campaign for Mississippi governor.
Luckett, who owns a blues club and a restaurant in Clarksdale with veteran actor Morgan Freeman, announced Thursday that he has formed a political action committee called Progress for Mississippi.
“This is just the preamble,” Luckett said via cell phone from New York City. “We’re definitely in the preliminary stages of all of this. We’re going to go out, raise some funds, create an agenda and see what’s out there.
“It’s a very daunting task that is before us. I’ve never served in public office and have been president of country clubs and hunting clubs and co-chairman of the (state) Democratic party in the 70’s and 80’s but that’s about it. It’s going to be a sacrifice. It’s going to take a lot of work, but I’m doing this because I know I can made a difference.”
Luckett added that the goal is to raise money to elect a Democratic governor. Because of a two-term limit, Republican Gov. Haley Barbour can’t run again in 2011.
