Michael Recio cops to a misdemeanor plea Friday
U.S. District Judge Dan Jordan confirmed this afternoon that Michael Recio, the former police bodyguard of Mayor Frank Melton, has reached a plea agreement with federal prosecutors.
According to his attorney, Cynthia Stewart, Recio pleaded guilty to misdemeanor aiding and abetting a civil rights violation.
“Michael Recio has chosen to put this matter behind him so that, as (Melton’s brother) Rodney Melton asked our federal government at the mayor’s memorial service, this city may begin to heal,” she said in a statement. “He wants his family to have a chance to heal as well. His wife and three young sons have stood beside him during the last two-plus years of enormous emotional and financial stress. He asks that you respect his decision and their privacy.”
