Recio resigns

Interim Jackson Police Chief Tyrone Lewis said today he expects former mayoral bodyguard Sgt. Michael Recio to resign from the department on Monday.

Recio, 39, pleaded guilty Friday to a misdemeanor civil rights violation, ending the federal case against him, Mayor Frank Melton and another former police bodyguard Marcus Wright that began in July.

“I spoke with his attorney briefly (on Friday), and she voiced a verbal resignation,” Lewis said. “She had the documentation but it has not been officially delivered. She said it would on Monday.”

As a result of Recio’s guilty plea, he must give up his badge for a year, said Recio’s close friend, Assistant Canton Police Chief Bracey Coleman. Coleman was with Recio in the federal courthouse Friday when the plea was entered.
