Gene Taylor pushes national wind insurance

Adding wind coverage to the nation’s flood insurance program will pass the House this year, but once again faces hurdles in the Senate, said Rep. Gene Taylor, D-Bay St. Louis.

Taylor, speaking at the three-state Gulf States Hurricane Conference on Friday at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum, urged the emergency management officials from Alabama to seek the support of Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Tuscaloosa.

“I just ask you to encourage him to support us this time,” said Taylor of Shelby. “We need his help.”

Shelby is ranking minority member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs. Shelby and Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., chairman of the banking committee, opposed adding wind to the flood insurance program in 2008.

“Sen. Christopher Dodd is slowly coming our way,” Taylor said.
