Dems to Specter: Don’t cut in line
Here comes the hangover.
Just a day after celebrating Arlen Specter’s defection from the GOP, Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday were bracing for a war with both their newest colleague and their majority leader.
In the course of courting Specter, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid promised the Pennsylvania Republican that he’d retain his seniority if he switched to the Democratic Party. According to Senate customs, that would let Specter — with 29 years in the Senate — leapfrog most of the Democrats on the Appropriations Committee.
