Frances Fredericks won’t run again

After a nearly 20-year career in the Legislature, state Rep. Frances Fredericks said Monday she won’t seek re-election.

The Democrat represents House District 119, a seat she captured in 1990 after her husband, then state Rep. Isiah Fredericks, died during the middle of his term from colon cancer. Fredericks won the seat with 59 percent of the vote that year and only faced an opponent one other time, when the district lines were redrawn in 1992 and she received 81 percent of the vote. She’s ran four elections since unopposed, which in the political world is usually a testament to an elected official’s popularity.

Last year, House Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, picked Fredericks to chair the Marine Resources Committee, which handles issues of high interest to the Coast. She’s also held seats on other powerful committees, including ways and means and also public health.
