Minor seeking leave to go to wife’s funeral

Minor seeking leave to go to wife’s funeral

The wife of former Mississippi lawyer Paul Minor died of brain cancer this week while he was hundreds of miles away in a federal prison camp seeking an emergency temporary release to be with her.

Minor’s attorney, Hiram Eastland Jr., said Tuesday he is hoping the Justice Department now will grant Minor a 30-day leave from the the minimum-security Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, Fla., to attend his wife’s funeral and be with his family. The Minors have two adult children.

“It’s a real tragedy that Paul wasn’t released to spend time with his dying wife,” Eastland said.

Minor is serving an 11-year sentence after his March 2007 conviction of bribing two judges. The New Orleans-based 5th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday denied his emergency request to be released to be with his wife, Sylvia.
