Amid reports of Sheriff McMillan resigning, Frank Melton fires McMillan

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 1, 2009

Melton: Jackson police chief fired

Mayor Frank Melton said he is firing Jackson Police Chief Malcolm McMillin today.

Melton has called a news conference for 2 p.m. at City Hall to announce McMillin’s replacement.

“I know who I will be appointing,” Melton said. “I am ready to go.”

Melton’s announcement comes after days of speculation that McMillin had plans to resign.

Earlier today McMillin, who had Tuesday insinuated he’d make an announcement this morning at his weekly police command staff meeting, instead simply told his police department to “keep up the good work.”

Dressed in a suit and tie, McMillin talked about some of the things he’s most proud of and thanked his staff. “I’m really amazed at the job you do with the few resources you have,” he said.
