Democrats disqualify Jackson mayor
The Jackson Democratic Municipal Executive Committee disqualified Mayor Frank Melton to run for reelection this evening, stating Melton did not meet the city’s residency requirements.
The unanimous vote takes Melton’s name off the ballot for the May 5 primary.
Melton has said he will challenge the ruling.
Claude McInnis, chairman of the executive committee, said Melton does not file for homestead exemption in Jackson, as required.
“There’s a residency question,” McInnis said.
