Zach Scruggs’ stay in Lafayette jail indefinite
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons apparently has reined in former attorney Zach Scruggs to remind him he’s still a federal prisoner.
Scruggs, 34, of Oxford caused such a stir last week, as he was seen passing through town from an Arkansas prison to a Tupelo halfway house, that BOP apparently reassigned him to the Lafayette County Jail to think about it.
“The Bureau of Prisons just jerked his chain,” observed an attorney close to the case, who asked not to be identified.
The son of Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, also a federal prisoner, pleaded guilty in March 2008 for his part in a scheme to bribe Circuit Judge Henry Lackey of Calhoun City. Zach Scruggs was sentenced to 14 months in prison and moved to a transition facility so that he could work and prepare for release by mid-August.
Earlier published reports stated he was re-arrested by BOP because he failed to meet his 2 p.m. sign-in Tuesday in Tupelo.
But his Oxford attorney, Cal Mayo, disputed that report and other details, saying his client actually reported 15 minutes early.
