Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS) today voted against the $410 billion Omnibus Appropriations bill, continuing his commitment to restoring fiscal responsibility and returning to a balanced budget. The omnibus would represent a $32 billion, or 8.3 percent, increase over FY 2008 spending levels, appropriating funds for the government that are excessive under the nation’s current economic crisis, and increasing the financial burden on hard working Americans.
“In the face of tough economic times, hard working North Mississippians are forced to prioritize their spending and make hard choices, and the U.S. government needs do the same,” said Congressman Childers. “Under current economic conditions, we should be finding ways to save, not expanding funding for the federal government.
“Many of the omnibus-funded programs are valid. However, there is overall too much unnecessary spending included in the bill, and the government cannot afford to spend without discipline or concern for the dire state of our economy. Should the omnibus pass without my vote, I will work hard to ensure that North Mississippi receives adequate funding in both the Senate and final versions of the bill.”
