Thousands of Mississippians know Jack Reed and what he believes about the important public issues in our state during the past 50 years because he has made hundreds, perhaps thousands of speeches - disturbing the conscience of the status quo, moving people to a change of mind and heart, softening them with sharp, often self-deprecating humor, and making a passionate, reasoned case for doing what’s right.
The most important, but not necessarily the most widely known, of those speeches became part of the historic record in a new book – “A Time to Speak/Speeches by Jack Reed” – written by Danny McKenzie in collaboration with Reed during the past six years. The book is published by University Press of Mississippi, and profits are designated for the CREATE Foundation in Tupelo.
The first book signing appropriately will be on Tuesday at noon in Reed’s Gumtree Book Store in the R.W. Reed Co. department store in downtown Tupelo – the city to which he addressed many of his speeches, where many were delivered, and the source of inspiration through family, friends and sense of place.
