Last week, in a meeting with the Hattiesburg American editorial board, new Mississippi Chief Justice Bill L. Waller said he hoped to restore public trust in the state’s judicial system by promoting a “fair and efficient administration” in the state’s Supreme Court.
It’s a tall order in a state whose court system has been undermined by the Scruggs judicial bribery scandal.
In fact, complaints against judges in Mississippi are increasing, according to Brant Brantley, executive director of the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance.
“I think a reason for that is the adverse publicity the judiciary has received with the federal judicial bribery scandal case,” Brantley told Clarion-Ledger reporter Jerry Mitchell.
