Complaint lodged in hiring of ex-justice

By: Magnolia Tribune - February 20, 2009

The Clarion-Ledger, 2/19/9

A complaint has been filed with the state judicial watchdog agency against Chancery Judge Larry Buffington over his appointment of former state Supreme Court Justice Oliver Diaz as a Youth Court public defender in Simpson County.

“His (Buffington’s) actions warranted a complaint when he used his power as a judge to make an unnecessary appointment, just so one of his friends could earn state retirement,” Simpson County resident Tom Bruckner said in a statement. Bruckner filed the complaint this week.

Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance Executive Director Brant Brantley said Wednesday because of confidentiality rules he can neither confirm nor deny a complaint has been filed against Buffington.

If the commission determines a judge has violated any code of the Judicial Canons, it can recommend punishment up to suspension and removal from office.
