Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith says a letter he wrote last month questioning tactics of some of the county’s white judges and attorneys has led to private meetings and dialogue.
“Sometimes you need to open up things and have dialogue,” Smith said.
The letter, addressed to “ladies and gentlemen,” was copied to Circuit Judges Swan Yerger, Tomie Green and Winston Kidd; County Judges Bill Barnett and Houston Patton; Hinds County Public Defender Bill LaBarre; and Board of Supervisors President George Smith.
Barnett, LaBarre and Yerger are white.
“I asked Robert if he was saying I was racist, and he said that was not the case,” Yerger said. “He probably shouldn’t have sent that letter out.”
