U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., said Thursday that any economic stimulus bill should be more targeted at job creation and less expensive to taxpayers.
Mississippi’s senior senator, Thad Cochran, had expressed a similar view Monday.
As Senate moderates worked toward a trimmed-down version of the House-passed stimulus measure, Wicker reiterated that Congress should take more time with the package.
“Let’s not rush into doing this the wrong way, because generations of Americans – Republicans, Democrats and Independents – will pay for our mistakes,” he said in remarks prepared for delivery on the Senate floor.
Wicker supported an alternative sponsored by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., but that plan was defeated Thursday afternoon.
Wicker, a Republican from Tupelo, acknowledged the need for a stimulus, but said, “In order to get it right, this package needs to be laser-focused on getting workers back to work, getting our housing market out of the gutter, and doing so in a way that doesn’t waste taxpayer dollars.”
