College football’s monster conference put a little more distance between itself and the country’s lesser leagues on national signing day.
SEC schools inked more than a third of the nation’s most coveted prospects and signed nine of the top 20 classes in the nation according to Rivals.com.
In a muscle-flexing, rich-get-richer demonstration unlike any seen on February’s famed first Wednesday, Alabama and LSU finished 1-2 in the overall recruiting rankings, while defending national champion Florida claimed the quality sweepstakes, signing a smallish class (16 players) that boasted a board-best average prospect ranking of 3.94 stars.
It was yet another daunting demonstration by the conference that has claimed the last three national titles and next season will feature perhaps the most complete squad ever assembled on one college campus.
In the last two decades, there have been three teams that entered an offseason with the makings of a best-ever roster: Nebraska (1995), Miami (2001) and USC (2005). Two of the three won titles in undefeated fashion (Nebraska and Miami), while the loaded Trojans fell to Texas in the most star-stacked title game in the brief history of the BCS.
