New football staff costs UT more than $5.3M

KNOXVILLE — When Lane Kiffin was hired as Tennessee’s new head football coach, he told fans to expect one of the best staffs in the nation.

Now, the money appears impressive as well.
The Volunteers’ new staff will earn a combined $5.325 million in 2009, the university announced Thursday.
That ranks fourth in the Southeastern Conference behind Alabama, Florida and LSU. Last year, UT’s total pool for the entire coaching staff was $4.7 million.
“Our funding model requires football to be successful in order to fund other sports and not detract from the university’s mission,” UT Athletic Director Mike Hamilton said. “This team of experienced coaches understands that vision.”
