Mississippi State’s Pegues hopes to add to memories
Derek Pegues has fond memories of Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
The last time Pegues was here, he ran for 106 yards as he and a team of Mississippi’s best high school seniors broke a six-year losing streak in the Alabama-Mississippi High School All-Star Classic. Included in his yardage was a 72-yard scoring run that still stands as the series record for the longest run from scrimmage.
Pegues went on to become an all-SEC defensive back at Mississippi State and is now hoping for another big performance in Mobile this week in Saturday’s Senior Bowl.
“There are some great memories coming back here,” Pegues said.
“Hopefully, I can have the same success I had four years ago when I came here.”
Pegues brings some strong credentials to his NFL audition. After earning a starting job at cornerback as a sophomore, he moved to free safety as a junior and earned first-team all-SEC honors with 50 tackles and five interceptions. He had 50 tackles again in 2008, placing him fourth on the team and earning him second-team all-SEC kudos from the league’s coaches.
