Lawmakers will try to help state agencies struggling with budget cuts and consider expanding charter schools this week – the third week of the 2009 regular legislative session.
Proposals that would allow Mississippians to vote early also may come up for debate.
It will be a short workweek for some legislators who are heading to Washington to witness the swearing-in of President-elect Barack Obama on Tuesday. Gov. Haley Barbour also will be there.
In the state Senate, legislation is expected to be introduced that would allow more charter schools in the state. The current law allows for six charter schools, and it expires in July.
Charter schools receive public money but are not bound by some of the rules that apply to public schools. In exchange, the schools provide some type of accountability for producing certain results.
