Quarterback Hatch decides to leave LSU

LSU will have a new quarterback to start the 2009 season other than the one who started the ’08 season.

Andrew Hatch has left the program, LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday.

Hatch started LSU’s first three games — all wins — but did not play in the final six after breaking a leg in a game against Georgia on Oct. 25. Hatch lost his starting job after suffering a concussion Sept. 13 early in the third quarter of a win at Auburn.

“Andrew Hatch will not be back,” Miles said.
Miles said “the speculation is he may return to Harvard. I do not know.”

Hatch played for Harvard and its junior varsity team in 2005. He missed the ’06 season while doing missionary work in Chile and played in one game for LSU in ’07.

Hatch threw for 286 yards and two touchdowns this season and ran for 129 yards and another two scores.

Hatch and Jarrett Lee traded series throughout the first three games. When Lee became the starter, Hatch swapped plays with Lee and was used more as a running threat.

Next season’s choices for LSU, which had three starting quarterbacks this season, include Jordan Jefferson, who started the last two games and was the offensive MVP of the Chick-fil-A Bowl; Lee and two freshmen who entered school this week, highly touted Russell Shepard and Chris Garrett.

With Hatch gone, LSU will begin with a new starting quarterback, Sept. 5 at Washington, for the fourth straight season. Matt Flynn began 2007 as the starter, as a senior, and JaMarcus Russell was the starter, as a junior, to begin ’06 and ’05.
