Holland introduces vaccine waiver bill into state House

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 14, 2009

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 1/14/9

Legislation promised last month by Rep. Steve Holland was introduced this week, offering hope to autism advocates that Mississippi will change its law dealing with vaccine waivers.

“I am very hopeful, and very grateful,” said Judy Brasher of Holcomb, president of the National Autism Association of Mississippi.

Holland, D-Plantersville, and chairman of the state House Public Health Committee, on Monday introduced House Bill 455, which would amend the state’s law regarding vaccine waivers. Currently, the law says that if a physician requests an exemption, the state “may” grant it. Holland’s bill would change the wording to “shall” grant the exemption.

It also outlines a procedure the state would have to follow in case it does deny it.
