Friends Worry Peters’ Legacy May Now Be Tainted

“I’m surprised at the charges they say they’ve got against him. I had no idea,” Medgar Evers’ brother Charles Evers said on Wednesday. “We all make deals — it’s nothing unusual. A man says, ‘You do this for me and I’ll do this for you.’ That’s just what politics are, so why they’re making a big deal about all these deals, I don’t know.”

Peters, who was district attorney from 1971 to 2001, was a supporter of current Hinds County District Attorney Robert Smith during his successful 2007 bid to unseat Faye Peterson.

“It’s unfortunate. He’s done a lot for Hinds County as the district attorney,” Smith said on Wednesday. “He’s been a good mentor and a good friend.”

Peters has not returned phone calls from 16 WAPT News requesting comment.
