College football: Urban Meyer has shot at the unthinkable

Everybody suspected football coach Urban Meyer was destined for even greater things when he left the Utah Utes following their historic undefeated Fiesta Bowl season four years ago.

But this is almost ridiculous.

Only four years into his new job at Florida, and already Meyer is poised for a shot at his second national championship — presuming his No. 2 Gators can beat No. 1 Alabama in the SEC championship game today in Atlanta, and earn a spot in the Bowl Championship Series title game next month.

“Who’s better?” Meyer said. “We’ll find out.”

Certainly, the oddsmakers believe Meyer can do it, having installed the Gators as 10-point favorites against an undefeated team widely regarded as the most physical in the country. And the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper already has speculated whether another national title will vault Meyer past the legendary Steve Spurrier in the hearts of most Florida fans.

(General consensus: not quite).

Yet the idea that Meyer could win his second national title in a three-year span remains astonishing, given that no other coach has won two in the 10-year history of the BCS. Only a precious few — titans of the industry, mostly — have won multiple titles in any era.
