The Mississippi State Bulldogs publicly faced the future Tuesday.
Former coach Sylvester Croom, who resigned Saturday, addressed his players in a team meeting Monday on campus in Starkville, Miss. Athletic director Greg Byrne and interim coach Rockey Felker also spoke to players during the meeting, which lasted less than half an hour.
While several players expressed sympathy for Croom, who recruited every player on MSU’s current roster, the players involved in a university-coordinated statement released Monday expressed a desire to move on.
“It hurts, but you know we have to move on,” defensive end Charles Mitchell said. “Coach Croom doesn’t want us to hold on to this and would want us to move on.”
Still, Croom’s resignation left a mark on his players. Senior defensive back Keith Fitzhugh, a high school senior when Croom was hired in December 2003, struck a sadder note.
