Recruit Russell, others now play wait-and-see

Tyler Russell found out Saturday morning that a big reason for his verbal commitment to Mississippi State was no longer in place.

Still, a few hours after Sylvester Croom’s resignation after five seasons as MSU’s coach was too soon for Meridian High’s senior quarterback to judge the impact coming signing day Feb. 4.

“My dad was the first one to tell me about it,” Russell said. “I was shocked. He was shocked, too.

“It really took me by surprise, but I’m not trying to focus on that right now. We’ve got a really good chance to win state. I think it would be unfair to my teammates with this great opportunity in front of us. I’ll handle it when the season’s over.”

Russell, who committed to the Bulldogs in April, is one of four members of The Clarion-Ledger’s Dandy Dozen who’ve made non-binding commitments to the Bulldogs. The list also includes Philadelphia defensive lineman Josh Boyd, Yazoo City defensive end Fletcher Cox and Magnolia Heights linebacker/safety Cameron Lawrence.
