The small matter of the allegedly bogus Hinds County Democratic sample ballot has yet to be officially explained to anyone’s particular satisfaction, but suffice it to say that it is one piece in a political puzzle that makes for interesting speculation about why Democrat Ronnie Musgrove lost his Senate race with Republican Roger Wicker by a wider margin than expected.
Wicker took a 55 percent in his win over Musgrove in a race that was polling (at least in the Democrat-leaning Research 2000 poll) much closer three weeks prior to the election.
Despite internal polling in the Wicker camp showing its man with roughly the lead he indeed received, Musgrove’s campaign has received an inordinate amount of post-mortem scrutiny regarding what appears to have been an outright snub of Musgrove’s campaign by powerful Democratic 2nd District U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson and Musgrove’s own delicate political dance in avoiding a clear embrace of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama’s campaign in Mississippi until the waning days of the campaign – an action that angered many Obama supporters.
