Johnson’s arrival energizes Gamecocks’ defense

Ellis Johnson might not have been Steve Spurrier’s first choice, but he was clearly the right choice.
Johnson, in his first season as South Carolina’s defensive coordinator, has the Gamecocks playing at a level defensively that they hadn’t sniffed previously under the Head Ball Coach.

After ranking 10th, ninth and ninth in the SEC in total defense during Spurrier’s first three seasons in Columbia, the Gamecocks are first in the SEC and third nationally heading into their biggest test of the season Saturday against Florida.
