TUSCALOOSA, Nov 10, 2008 (The Anniston Star – McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) — DIS | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating — Rolando McClain stood on the field at an empty Tiger Stadium in a suit and tie, and simply shrugged. He still hadn’t grasped all the emotions behind a 27-21 overtime victory against LSU that clinched Alabama’s first trip to the SEC Championship since 1999.
Maybe he doesn’t have to. Now that Alabama has achieved one of its preseason goals, McClain, like his team, can turn his attention to a bigger prize.
“It feels great to win the West, but we are not going to try to stop there,” McClain said.
The victory by No. 1 Alabama (10-0, 6-0 SEC) against then-No. 15 LSU (6-3, 3-3) could turn out to be the Tide’s last major regular season hurdle.
Another one Alabama had no power over was removed Saturday when Iowa beat then-unbeaten Penn State. Alabama and Texas Tech are the only two remaining undefeated teams from BCS conferences. This means if the Tide wins out, it will avoid a situation similar to Auburn’s in 2004, when the Tigers went 13-0 and were left out of the national championship. If Alabama goes undefeated, it will go to the national championship game.
