Council members watch, wait

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 10, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 11/9/8

Behind closed doors at Jackson City Hall, people are contemplating how a possible felony conviction for Mayor Frank Melton would shake up city government.

Melton heads to federal court this week to face three felony charges related to a police-style raid and damage to a Ridgeway Street duplex in 2006. A guilty verdict could send the first-term mayor to prison and force him from office.

The City Council would be charged with picking one of its members to temporarily fill the city’s top-elected position.

Councilman Charles Tillman said council members have not talked about a possible conviction. Instead, he said they are watching and waiting.

“I am pretty sure it is something that has crossed each and every one of our minds,” he said.
