Judicial candidates should gear campaigns to rule by the law

By: Magnolia Tribune - October 22, 2008

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal Editorial, 10/22/8

Electing judges and writing about judicial elections are both difficult tasks.

We can demand to know how John McCain and Barack Obama or senatorial candidates Ronnie Musgrove and Roger Wicker stand on every issue. We can quiz congressional candidates Greg Davis and Travis Childers about how they will vote on Iraq or on extending the minimum wage.

But judicial candidates are supposed to be limited in what they can say. They are not supposed to comment on how they would rule on particular cases, for instance.

This is relevant because on Nov. 4 not only will Mississippi voters select a president, two senators and four U.S. House members, but we also will select four members of the nine-member state Supreme Court.
