Auburn can still become special team
AUBURN — The season is one-third done, Auburn’s offense is still searching for consistency and the team already has a difficult path to Atlanta.
If you’re a glass-half-empty person — a “doom-and-gloomer” in message-board parlance — that’s the way you evaluate the first four games of Auburn’s 2008 season.
But now let’s look at it another way — the “sunshine pumper’s” perspective, if you will.
Despite serious but ut terly predictable growing pains on offense, Auburn is only a couple plays from an undefeated record and a win against the defending national champion. Moreover, with the exception of about 15 minutes last week, Auburn’s defense has been among the most dominant units in the country.
The truth lies somewhere in between, of course. Auburn can still put together a special season, although three of the next four games (Tennessee, Vanderbilt and West Virginia) are very dangerous.
The defense isn’t flawless, as last week’s second half against LSU showed, but it’s still good enough to win a lot of games if Auburn can provide the slightest bit of help on offense.
