The Ole Miss Rebels don’t have much time to reflect on their missed opportunities in Saturday’s 23-17 loss to Vanderbilt in Oxford.
The Rebels (2-2, 0-1 in the SEC) face fourth-ranked Florida (3-0, 1-0) on Saturday in Gainesville, Fla. The Gators served notice they’re for real in their 30-6 trouncing of Tennessee last week at Neyland Stadium.
Ole Miss, meanwhile, turned the ball over six times against Vanderbilt, including Dexter McCluster’s fumble at the 1-yard line with about three minutes left. D.J. Moore made the recovery for the Commodores in the end zone.
“Florida doesn’t need any help,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. “We’ve already helped two teams (Vanderbilt and Wake Forest). They (Florida) don’t need any help. They’ve got the Heisman Trophy guy (Tim Tebow). They’ve got one of the fastest teams in the country. You can’t have many turnovers.”
Tebow almost beat the Rebels by himself last year at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. He rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 261 yards and a couple scores as the Gators stopped Ole Miss 30-24.
Nutt, the Rebels’ first-year coach, uses Mondays to give his team a day off. Ole Miss was back on the practice field Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the loss to Vandy.
“You try to get that bad taste out of your mouth,” Nutt said. “You look at the little things.”
Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead showed a lot of promise in the Rebels’ first two games, throwing four TD passes in their 30-28 loss at Wake Forest earlier this month. But Snead had a nightmare game against Vanderbilt, throwing four interceptions while completing 12 of 25 passes for 184 yards. One of those interceptions was returned for a Vandy touchdown.
