Through triumph & tragedy, Deanna and Brett Favre remain a constant

Brett Favre is on the field at Giants Stadium, searching for a receiver and dodging several advancing Patriots. Deanna Favre is in her private box, standing, her fists clenched and her body tense.
Favre sees limited options, so the quarterback scrambles to his right, and finally dumps a short pass to his old Green Bay teammate, tight end Bubba Franks. The Jets, in the third quarter of an eventual 19-10 defeat to New England, lose five yards on the play.
Deanna sits and exhales. “See,” she says with the knowing smirk of someone familiar with all of Brett’s moves. “That’s improvising.”

Improvisation, for better or worse, is a trait often associated with the Jets’ new quarterback, both on the field and in his personal life, and Deanna Favre has seen it all. She began dating Brett at 14. Together, they have endured teenage pregnancy, Brett’s drug addiction and alcoholism, threats of divorce, deaths in their family, Deanna’s breast cancer diagnosis at 35 and a painful split from the Green Bay Packers. It is a long list of challenges, but they are still together.
