Ole Miss hands Vandy a costly gift
OXFORD — The Ole Miss Rebels had Vanderbilt on the ropes and slipped at the Commodores’ 1-yard line.
Dexter McCluster fumbled just before reaching the end zone with 2:30 left Saturday night, and Vanderbilt’s D.J. Moore made the recovery in the end zone, sending the Commodores to a 23-17 upset of the Rebels at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
The Rebels (2-2, 0-1 in the SEC) turned the ball over six times, including four interceptions by sophomore quarterback Jevan Snead.
Ole Miss trailed by only three points when McCluster lost the ball just short of the goal line. The play was reviewed by replay officials, but the ruling on the field was not overturned.
“That was a tough one to swallow there,” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. “We had a lot of missed opportunities there and could have put this game away early. We gave them a lot of gifts.”
