Mississippi residents and business owners could see significant tax breaks if the state decides to implement recommendations outlined by a governor-appointed tax study commission, said Jackson County Supervisor Manly Barton, who served on the group.
In January, Gov. Haley Barbour created the public-private Tax Study Commission to examine the state’s tax code and recommend reforms to make the code fairer and more efficient. Barton was assigned to the business activity subcommittee.
“The governor said from the very beginning that what he wanted to see was for us to look at state taxing from top to bottom,” Barton said. “There wasn’t anything off the table.”
