The Democratic chairman of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee says Mississippi’s Republican governor is trying to disenfranchise voters by putting the special election for Trent Lott’s old Senate seat near the bottom of the ballot.
Rep. John Conyers of Michigan on Tuesday called Gov. Haley Barbour’s action a “blatant violation” of the Voting Rights Act. Conyers is calling on the Justice Department to intervene.
Barbour says past special elections have been low on ballots. State Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, says state law requires federal races to be near the top.
A state judge ordered Barbour to move the race higher. Barbour appealed to the state Supreme Court.
