Mississippi Democrats on Monday tried to discredit Sen. John McCain’s pledge to reform Washington, citing a report compiled by national Democrats that links his campaign with lobbyists.
Republicans denied that McCain favors special-interest groups and countered that Democrats also are linked with lobbyists.
McCain faces Sen. Barack Obama in a debate Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi in Oxford. Both have promised to reform Washington, and McCain has tried to distance himself from President Bush.
At a news conference at the Mississippi Capitol on Monday, Democratic state party treasurer Paul Winfield said lobbyists helping advise McCain’s campaign “would propose to give the big corporations a big boost while giving regular American people nothing and more importantly Mississippians very little relief, if any at all.”
