Athens —Mark Richt couldn’t suppress a little chuckle when he answered an inevitable question during his weekly teleconference call on Sunday.
Was he surprised or disappointed by Sunday’s news that, despite an undefeated season so far, Georgia had dropped yet again in both Top 25 polls?
“I’m really not worried about it,” he told reporters. “We can’t control it. We can control trying to win the Eastern Division. You can you control whatever game you’re playing. We want to win every game we can and put ourselves in position to possibly be there in the end. But so much time has to pass. So many games have to be played.”
After opening the season No. 1 in the both AP and USA Today/Coaches polls, the Bulldogs fell to No. 2 after a 45-15 win over Division I-AA Georgia Southern in Week One and then to No. 3 following Saturday’s 14-7 win at South Carolina. Oklahoma, which recorded its third consecutive blowout in a 55-14 win at Washington, leapfrogged into the second spot behind Southern Cal.
Richt is acutely aware that falling to No. 3 effectively means Georgia could go undefeated this season and get left out of the BCS title game like Auburn did in 2004. But with a treacherous schedule that includes a trip west to Arizona State on Saturday, he doesn’t believe such a scenario is likely.
“We all know we have the type of schedule that will put us back in business if we’re able to take care of business,” he said. “The question is, are we going to take care of business? But that’s everybody.”
