It’s Show Me Weekend in football
Last April Notre Dame football coach Charlie Weis was not worried about Michigan. He was worried about making Notre Dame fans forget that his team finished 3-9 last season and that 89 teams have won bowl games since the Fighting Irish last won one (Cotton Bowl, Jan. 1, 1994).
Rather than talk about that, Weis said this to a group of ND fans before the spring game: “To hell with Michigan.”
If you watch the video of Weis delivering his words on Youtube.com, you’ll understand that he warmed up by saying that Michigan would come to South Bend making “excuses” about the difficulties of adjusting to a new coaching staff.
That was April. This is game week. Now Charlie Gipp says his words were actually a tribute to the late Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, who was known to pepper his pregame speeches by saying, “To hell with Notre Dame.”
