AUBURN — Tony Franklin saw it too many times as he reviewed film from Saturday’s game: With four receivers streaking down the field, quarterbacks Chris Todd and Kodi Burns held onto the football, choosing not to make the high-risk throws.
Franklin thinks he knows why.
“It’s probably because (they’re thinking), ‘If I make a bad throw or a bad decision, it might be my last one.’ I’ve got to get that out of their heads,” Franklin said.
One day after taking full blame for what he called an “ugly” offensive showing, Auburn’s first-year offensive coordinator candidly acknowledged that the team’s carefully cultivated two-quarterback system might be taking its toll on those quarterbacks.
Auburn finished with more than 400 yards of total offense, but had only 68 yards passing (mostly in the fourth quarter).
The two quarterbacks alternated on each series until the third quarter, when Burns left with an injury. Franklin said he wanted Saturday’s rotation to relieve stress, but it didn’t work.
