Miss. has powerful convention contingent

By: Magnolia Tribune - September 2, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 8/31/8

If the parties say anything about clout, the Mississippi delegation appears to be a pretty powerful bunch at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., this week.

However, because of Hurricane Gustav and Tropical Storm Hanna, Gov. Haley Barbour won’t be traveling to the convention until he knows how his state has been affected – “and then only if Mississippi is in the clear,” spokesman Pete Smith said in a statement Saturday.

Sen. Roger Wicker, another of Mississippi’s 39 delegates, also canceled traveling to the convention, according to his office.

Sen. John McCain told Fox News in an interview taped Saturday with Chris Wallace that he was considering curtailing the convention, scheduled to open Monday, because of Gustav.

Barbour was scheduled to be feted at a welcome reception tonight and had two more scheduled Tuesday. Another reception honoring the entire Mississippi delegation is set for Wednesday night.
