As Hurricane Gustav bore down on the Gulf Coast, members of Mississippi’s delegation to the Republican National Convention were pleased on Monday with the way the convention’s schedule has been shortened and refocused on helping storm victims.
“Obviously, we would have preferred this not happen,” said state party chairman Jim Herring. “We need to adjust our actions to show respect and support to the people in the Gulf Coast.”
“Of all people, it should be Mississippians who appreciate the support,” Herring said.
The Mississippi delegation’s opening night party was turned into a fundraiser for the Salvation Army. Many other delegations used their initial events to raise money for storm-related charities.
