Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is urging Gulf Coast evacuees to wait until Wednesday to return home and cautioned that more evacuations could be ahead.
About 14,251 people sought refuge in emergency shelters throughout the state ahead of Hurricane Gustav. Many more have been staying in area hotels.
“You may rush back to (an area) that’s flooded or without electricity,” Barbour said. “That doesn’t serve any positive purpose.”
Barbour said residents should not return today because some roadways on the Coast are impassable and a 6 p.m. curfew has been imposed.
