BULLDOGS:MSU bumbles away last year’s momentum
RUSTON, La. – This wasn’t just an upset.
This was a catastrophe.
Mississippi State bumbled away Saturday’s season opener at Louisiana Tech thanks to five turnovers in a 22-14 setback.
Even worse, MSU bumbled away any momentum it had gained from last year’s 8-5, Liberty Bowl-winning finish.
“I found out what I needed to know. We are an undisciplined team, no doubt,” MSU coach Sylvester Croom said. “That was very obvious.
“I apologize to the fans,” he added. “I hope they don’t give up on us now. We will get it corrected.”
MSU held a 14-3 lead in the second quarter, but that evaporated as the turnovers piled up, including three interceptions by starting quarterback Wesley Carroll. His final pick came late in the third quarter in the Louisiana Tech red zone, and it led to a field goal for the home Bulldogs, who led 19-14 entering the fourth.
Derek Pegues was probably feeling just as miserable as Carroll, who wasn’t on the field for State’s last-ditch fourth quarter drive. That job belonged to newcomer Tyson Lee.
