REBELS:New Wild Rebel’ plays make enormous splash
OXFORD – Houston Nutt was coy when asked how much he might show with the “Wild Rebel” formation in the season opener against Memphis.
In a 41-24 victory against Memphis, the answer was clear early. The new Ole Miss coach likes the formation a lot.
The Ole Miss offense put the ball in play from the Wild Rebel eight times in the first half, as the Rebels generated 292 yards en route to a 24-10 lead.
They ran from the formation 10 times on the night, twice for touchdowns.
Memphis was playing its first game under new defensive coordinator Tim Walton.
“I thought they played at a good tempo offensively in the first half, and we didn’t react to it,” Memphis coach Tommy West said. “Our defense plays against a fast tempo all the time, but for whatever reason, we looked out of sync. When they were on the line of scrimmage about to snap the ball, we were standing around doing nothing.”
