The Ragin’ Cajuns traveled to Southern Miss for the season opener, hoping to set the tone for the 2008 football season. But USM’s Damion Fletcher’s 222 yard effort proved to be too much for the Cajuns to overcome in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Junior tailback Damion Fletcher rushed for a career high 222 yards and two touchdowns as Southern Mississippi (1-0) won Larry Fedora’s debut as a head coach 51-21 Saturday night over Louisiana (0-1) before a crowd of 32,792 at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
Fletcher picked up 184 yards on 16 carries and had two scores in the first half, as USM (1-0) took a quick 21-0 lead and went on to a 34-14 halftime advantage.
USM would rush for 406 yards and rolled up 633 yards of total offense in the victory
The Ragin-Cajuns (0-1) managed a pair of touchdown runs, a 1-yarder by Julian Shankle and a 3-yarder by Tyrell Fenroy, in the first half. Fenroy would not play in the second half, because of a head injury.
The Cajuns managed 394 yards of total offense, 263 of that from the ground game. The Cajuns were led on the ground by quarterback Michael Desormeaux, rushing for 146 yards on 16 carries. Senior Tyrell Fenroy rushed for 56 yards, before exciting the game.
