OXFORD – Defensive tackle Jerrell Powe played in his first Ole Miss football game Saturday, completing a journey with twists, turns and drama that begin following his senior season at Wayne County High School in 2004.

“I was nervous when I got out there. I thought I could have done a little better, but for the most part I did pretty good. They play a slide protection, and that’s pretty hard to go against. The D-line will continue to work, and we’ll get better.”

Powe’s comments were his first since being cleared to compete. He played about 10 plays and was credited with one solo tackle.

He was a hit in the players’ walk through the Grove before the game drawing attention from many fans.

Five running backs play
Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said during the week he would play five running backs, and the five who participated in the camp competition all carried the ball – even freshman Devin Thomas who got two carries late in the game.

“You can see we’re not going to redshirt anybody. They’re going to play,” Nutt said.

Freshman Brandon Bolden was by far the most productive. He had 76 yards rushing, 37 passing and 53 on kick returns.

Starting tailback Cordera Eason carried 10 times for 32 yards, and freshman Enrique Davis had six rushes for 24 yards.

Bolden and Davis had rushing touchdowns.

Key Drive
– After a three-and-out on their first possession, the Rebels found themselves backed up to their 3 on the second try. They covered 97 yards in seven plays, getting the points when Jevan Snead hit Shay Hodge near mid-field. Hodge made a leaping grab over a defender, then found green space in the middle of the field to complete a 64-yard play.

Key Number – 41
– The most points scored by Ole Miss since a 43-40 win over South Carolina in 2003.
