Melton bodyguard’s attorney may seek separate trial
John Colette of Jackson, the attorney for Jackson Police Detective Marcus Wright, said he and his client still are deciding how best to respond to a three-count federal indictment accusing Wright, Melton and fellow bodyguard Michael Recio of civil rights violations and a federal gun charge.
The charges stem from the trio’s alleged role in an Aug. 26, 2006, raid on a duplex on Ridgeway Street in west Jackson that Melton has alleged was used as a base to sell drugs. The indictment accuses the men of participating in the raid, where witnesses say a group of young men traveling with the mayor used sledgehammers to damage the house.
“After reviewing (the indictment) I’m certainly going to file a motion to dismiss within the next 30 days,” Colette said.
